Educational System
Universal education is a noble aim, difficult to achieve. To avoid wasting our resources, I am giving some practical suggestions.
1. All children should be enrolled in schools and given basic knowledge in local language, arithmetic and general knowledge, up to standard four. (Primary)
2. There must be an examination to select children with aptitude and willingness for studies in the next stage.(Secondary) Here basics of geography, history and science can be taught with the help of visuals, reducing the role of text books. Music and arts like painting, sculpture, handicrafts etc. are desirable at this stage, up to seventh standard.
3. At the end of the above period, THE EXAMINATION MUST AIM AT CHOOSING THE BEST, REALLY TALENTED students, for whom higher studies are necessary and desirable. Hereafter, studies must be compartmentalized. Science, geography, history, Samskrutam etc. are just some instances. It is undesirable to teach things just to cram everything into one skull, as if it is a box!
4. After tenth standard, there ought to be specialization. A biology student need not study physics, if uninterested.
5. College level education can be restricted to the very bright students.
There must be all sorts of books available in the library. An intelligent student can learn much more from books, than in the class room. Qualified teachers must be available for helping the students.
The importance of tests is necessary. At the same time, assessment by teachers is more useful. Mugging up answers must be discouraged.
